How Do I Fix My Perth Summer Hair

How Do I Fix My Perth Summer Hair

fix my Perth summer hair | Hairdresser Trigg | Scarborough | North Beach | Carine | Duncraig | Sorrento

Its finally starting to cool down and that’s got you wondering, how do I fix my Perth Summer hair?

Summers in Perth are always amazing, you’ve been at Trigg beach, in the surf, in the pool in Scarborough and outside in the beautiful sun at the parks in North Beach for months. It’s been amazing but has taken a toll on your hair, right?

The only way to keep your hair absolutely perfect is to keep it out of the sun, surf and chlorine. The only true way to achieve this is to find a cave somewhere and never come out of it. You’d have killer hair but that would literally be the only benefit!

So how can you live the life you love AND have fabulous hair?

Regular haircuts are a must!

In the summer months in Perth, we recommend no longer than 6-8 weeks between trims. The great thing about having regular trims like this is that your hair will actually appear to grow faster. Regular micro trims will allow the ends of your hair to stay healthy and not start fraying and breaking. This is what makes it feel like your hair stops growing.

Good ‘foundation’ hair products are next on the list.

What’s foundation products you ask?

They are the 3 must haves for almost everyone who wants good hair. A good quality shampoo, conditioner and leave in moisturiser for the ends of your hair. Your poor ends often get missed out. Invest in a moisturiser and you will be amazed at what your hair gives back to you.

Give the hot tools a break from time to time.

Hot tools can be as hot as 230 degrees! On some hair types, just one styling session can cause a lot of damage. Try to minimise the use and ask yourself before you turn them on if you really need to do it for this occasion or perhaps you could style it without them. Save the hot tools for really special events.

How can I fix my Perth summer hair?

Well sadly you can’t usually actually fix hair at all. You can replace moisture but if its damaged and sensitised, all you can really do is cut it off. The best fix is not damaging it in the first place. Get regular cuts, use amazing products and give the styling regime an overhaul.

Your hair is another part of your body and like your body what you put into it is what you get out…

Introducing new team member Stephen,

I visited Perth two times as a tourist and fell in love with everything about the west coast. I felt at home with the people and culture, so much so that I decided to make it my home.

I grew up in Sydney where I started working as a hairdresser on the weekends while I was in school. I had a real passion for hair and the salon environment where I thrived.

I started my apprenticeship straight out of high school. Now, 15 years on, I still love this profession and what I get to do each day.

I get a buzz out of meeting new people and getting to know them but most of all I love making people feel good about themselves. The best way to do this is to help people have best hair they possibly can.

In my time in this fabulous industry, I’ve had the opportunity to work is some very different areas compared to my daily life on the salon floor. From styling hair for photos shoots right through to doing hair cuts on some amazing humans in disability group homes, I feel like I’ve used my skills in varied places!

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Sustainable Hairdressing

Sustainable hairdressing can be done! You’ll be comfortable coming to Trigg Hair Studio knowing you’re helping to protect your planet and your futures, with small and big changes.

Sustainable hairdressing begins with the product companies chosen for use in salon. Both Davines and Pure Hair care are B Corp and have zero carbon omissions. The products they use break down in the water quickly. This is an important step not all brands can attest to. It also means your doing your part for your planet and looking smoking hot!

Once you’re in the salon you can have a coffee knowing that the pods are biodegradable.

The wrappers from the refreshments you can choose from, get recycled every time. The plastic recycling doesn’t only include some of the plastic, its all of it.

At Trigg Hair Studio we have partnered with a company called Sustainable Salons. They help us to reuse and recycle approximately 95% of all salon waste. The 5% left behind is organic and composable waste that will break down quickly by its self.

Foil used on you in salon, gets sold to metal scrap yards. The profits are donated to Oz Harvest. That means you’re helping to feed the homeless with every foil!

Any of your left over chemical waste gets neutralised, turned into water and used on roads for construction.

What happens to your hair you ask? Well if its over 20cms long, you can donate it for use in wigs. This helps both Alopecia and cancer sufferers. Any shorter pieces are collected and used to collect oil spills on our precious oceans.

If you have any more ideas of what we could do to help our planet, please feel free to share them all with us.

Your hair is the piece of clothing you never take off

Your Hair Is The Piece Of Clothing You Never Take Off

Trigg Hair Studio | Hairdresser Trigg | Scarborough | Carine | Duncraig | NOrth Beach | Watermans Bay | Sorrento

Your hair is the piece of clothing you never take off.

Think about it, do you treat your hair the same as other fabrics you wear?

The hair on your head could be anywhere from 1-5 years old, do you have any clothes that you have kept that long, let alone worn everyday?

OK let me put this in perspective…

If your hair is half as long as the woman in the picture, its about 3 years old. That’s like a tee shirt you’ve worn for 1000 days straight. Lets say you’re one of those lucky ones who only has to wash your hair once a week, that means you’ve washed your tee shirt 150 times!

What is the fabric of your tee shirt like after 150 washes?

Thin and maybe has a few holes?

What is the colour like?

Faded and muted?

Washing and wearing is only one of the things we do to our hair that we wouldn’t even do to our much loved tee shirt, how about…?

  • summers at the beach and in the pool (salt AND chlorine)
  • frequent blow drying and ironing
  • washing in super hot water in winter

So whats the point of this article?

  • Its not to scare you but to empower you, so you realise what you put your poor old hair thorough.
  • Its to encourage you to think about your hair as much as you can while you’re living your best life.
  • Its to make you realise that while we hairdressers are truly amazing, we only have your hair for maybe 3 hours every 6 weeks. You can undo the good we’ve done very quickly.

When your colour fades quicker than you’d like please remember this tee shirt analogy. Please take our professional advise when it comes to the products you use on your tee shirt, oops I mean hair!

Your hair is not your favorite pair of jeans that you wear frequently but spend more time indoors out of the sun and protected from UV in a draw or cupboard.

How To Create The Perfect Curl

How To Create The Perfect Curl

Trigg Hair Studio | How to do the perfect curl || Hairdresser Trigg | Scarborough | Karinyuo | North Beach | Watermans Bay | Sorrento | Carine | Duncraig

We want to help YOU create the perfect curl!

We get it, it looks so easy when the professionals do it right! Well we’d hope so, we’ve spent years making it look this way!

First things first, its best to try the following techniques with the hot tool turned off first. This way you can have a play and get used to the feeling without burning your hair unnecessarily.

There are many options to create a curl/wave from a hot tool. You can choose from curling irons, flat irons and many other conical shapes. The basic principals are the same.

You need to think about the direction the curl/wave is going in. Glamour curls/waves are typically all the the same direction and a more playful  or textured wave mixes it up a little.

Lets start with the glamour wave

To create a more polished curl/wave, you’re going to direct the hot tool in the same direction going away from the face and meeting in the middle at the back of your head. This will allow the curls to fall into each other and will give you the polished result you’re after.

Secondly the textured wave/curl

To create a more textured or playful curl/wave, you’re going to change the direction of the hair for each section. This prevents the hair from falling in together and therefore creates the ‘textured’ look you’re after.

Texture and glamour curl

You can combine these two textures together by directing the curls in the same direction, away from the face but leaving the ends out for a less structured finish.

Quick tips to make your curls/waves:

  • Don’t wash your hair right before you curl it. Depending on your hair type you should wash the night before or even 2-3 day after for best results. This is because a little of your natural oils will help the curl to retain in your hair.
  • Always use a great quality heat protector to help minimise the damage to your hair. These tools typically run between 180-230 degrees, the damage builds up over time so do your best to protect it.
  • Prepare the hair with a good quality mousse, this can be applied wet or dry or both.
  • Good quality hairspray and texture dust is a great way to finish the result and helps the style to stay for longer.

We can assist you with high quality products to help you, it does make a huge difference working with the best products possible.

The last thing is super important. Be sure to use the best quality hot tools you can. The better brands have special coatings often ceramic or from gemstones. This greatly assists in keeping your hair from getting as damaged. That being said try to keep use to a minimum as every time is doing at least a a small amount of damage.

Hair Styling Tools

Hair Styling Tools

The Hair styling tools you choose really do make a difference to your end result and your experience getting there.

Its easy to blame yourself and lack of expertise which of course can be part of the problem however its often not the whole picture.

Take your blow-dryer for example. You may not realise but they have different amounts of power and a low power blow-dryer not only takes longer to do the job but will also effect the end result.

This is one of those many examples in life when you do get what you pay for. It is worth investing in good tools for a more professional job.

So maybe you’re wondering how you can tell if your tools are right for your hair? Simple, next visit take them to your hairdresser and simply ask.

How about you have a blow drying lesson? This is something I offer and your hairdresser may offer too.

In this visit you bring in all the things you use on your hair for a couple of reasons:

– it means you use your own equipment so you can re-create the look more easily at home.

– it also means you can have all the tools and products you use looked at. This way advice can be given to you as to whats working for you and what isn’t.

I think sometimes its easy to think your hairdresser is only there to cut and colour your hair but there is a wealth of knowledge that can be shared with you if you ask.

Is There A Way To Save Water With Shampoo Choice?

Is There A Way To Save Water With Shampoo Choice

Sam Macdonlad Hair | Hairdresser Trigg Scarborough Double View City Beach Wembley Downs North Beach Karinyup Carine Duncraid Sorrento | Is There A Way To Save Water With Shampoo Choice

Is there a way to save water with shampoo choice? Well it wouldn’t be much of a post if the answer was no would it… ?

You’ve been given shampoo products for years that foam up. Now you feel like if it doesn’t foam well, its not doing its job. What you may not realise is that sulphates are that thing that gives you all the foam.

Sure foam makes you think your hair is clean but it also takes a lot of rinsing to remove it from the hair.

You’ve surely heard by now of sulphate free shampoos and most of you would prefer to use them. Sulphates are linked to allergic reactions in some people. In an age where we are becoming more allergic it makes sense to not use unnecessary irritants.

The great thing about sulphate free shampoos is that because they foam less, they rinse more easily and quickly from your hair.

There you have it, yes there is a way to save shampoo with buying choice. ?

Your Hair Gets Longer When Its Wet

Your Hair Gets Longer When Its Wet

am Macdonlad Hair | Hairdresser Trigg Scarborough Double View City Beach Wembley Downs North Beach Karinyup Carine Duncraid Sorrento | Your Hair Gets Longer When Its Wet

Your hair gets longer when its wet, well its more like it stretches. This does effectively make it longer but as it drys it goes back to it normal length.

Why do you need to keep this in mind?

The main reason is simply how you treat it while its actually wet. If you put your hair in a tight ponytail when its wet, as it drys and shrinks what do you then can happen to the hair?

Worst case scenario the hair itself could actually snap off causing permanent breakage. ?

A simple way to avoid this is to put your wet hair up loosely or simply wait till its dried. Scrunchies are actually great for if you want to put it up wet, as they are so gentle on the hair.

This is why its also important to be gentler on the hair when its wet. As its in a susceptible state a gentle combing action is preferable to an aggressive brushing one. A great option here is an afro or rake come, you know the ones with the wide teeth.

Sometimes people with frizzy or curly hair use a tight pony tail as a way of straightening their hair a little. Its important to be aware that the breakage can happen because over time you can end up with lots of short hairs, particularly around your hairline at the front and back of your hair.

You Want Your Hair To Grow

Sam Macdonlad Hair | Hairdresser Trigg Scarborough Double View City Beach Wembley Downs North Beach Karinyup Carine Duncraid Sorrento | You Want Your Hair To Grow

Well you need to cut it…

So many times I hear people tell me that they simply not cutting their hair so it will grow.

Now I do get the logic however there is something you’re not realising that plays a major part when growing your hair.

The ends of your hair put up with so much, colouring, hot tools, UV exposure and Chlorine to name a few. What happens to your hair while all this is being done to it? Basically those ends fray and eventually split.

We want to make sure we give it a small trim before we even get to the fraying bit. Once this starts it will actually fray faster than your hair can grow, therefore being the total opposite of what you wanted, shorter and ‘chewed’ looking on the ends. No one wants that!

Now my rule of thumb for this regular cut is dependent on exactly what your hair has to deal with from your lifestyle, as well as the type of hair you have to begin with.

If you have amazing quality hair that you treat very well, you may be able to get to 10 weeks. Your haircut will lose its shape by then but it shouldn’t be split.

What about the other end of the spectrum though? What about those of us that have a finer hair quality and use hot tools and colour regulary?

My guidelines here would be 5-6 weeks max. If you have what I like to call a ‘micro trim’ regularly your hair will grow much faster than if you don’t.

For all my guests I recommend trims every 5-10 weeks depending on what I have mentioned above.

As always if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Education is my thing and I love simplifying

all this hair stuff for you.

Is It Possible To Overwash Your Hair

Is It Possible To Overwash Your Hair

Sam Macdonlad Hair | Hairdresser Trigg Scarborough Double View City Beach Wembley Downs North Beach Karinyup Carine Duncraid Sorrento | Is It Possible To Overwash Your Hair

Yes it is possible to over wash your hair.

Imagine your hair is a beautiful silk scarf. Hair is scientifically very similar to hair so its a good example.

If you washed that scarf everyday for 365 days, how would it look? Faded, dry, most of its shine gone and even a bit thinner than when it was new?

Its exactly the same with hair as hair should be considered a fabric and treated accordingly.

It does make a difference what you’re washing your hair with of course but even the top of the range shampoos and conditioners will have an effect over time.

Some options are:

– simply don’t wash as much, oily haired people you can get great dry shampoos these days.

– make sure to use a leave in conditioner of some kind to replace lost moisture in the ends of your hair. A good shampoo and conditioner just aren’t enough.

– try co-washing, (I did post on the 6/6/19 if you’d like to know more about this).

– do weekly treatments that are right for your specific hair type, your hairdresser can help you with this or you can ask me.

On top of all of this, the constant removal of all the oil on your scalp results in your hair either feeling stripped for dryer hair types or getting oilier for oily hair types.

If you would like any further information and have questions please don’t hesitate to ask. I love educating people so you’ll be doing me a favor as well.?
