Plex or Bonding Treatments Are All the Rage but Do They Really Work?

You’ve either heard of or used some sort of bonding treatment at this point but do they really work?

Well, that depends on what your expectation of the treatment are…

What can they do?

  • Protect your hair from some of the damage created during the colouring process
  • Keep your hair healthier when take home products are used properly
  • Extend the life of your colour

What can’t they do?

  • Fix your hair if its super sensitized
  • Protect already sensitised hair from further damage
  • Encourage your hair to grow faster

What are some of the issues that misuse can cause?

  • The belief that because a plex/bonding treatment is used, you can push the colour too far with harsh chemicals
  • Over using the take-home plex/bonding treatments and causing a product build up which can lead to colours not being able to penetrate and even hair breakage
  • Your hair becoming limp and hard to style from the build-up of some take home treatments

What should I do to keep my hair healthy?

Definitely use a plex or bonding treatment in your colour but insure the following

  • You have an experienced colourist that understands how to use these products
  • That you take all of your chosen colourist’s advice
  • Don’t think that using a plex/bonding treatment means you can use hot tools everyday
  • Make sure you’re using professional hair products for everything you use, not just the plex/bonding treatment, click here to get a new perspective on your hair
  • Use high quality hot tools and minimise use as much as possible
  • Don’t sleep with the treatment in unless advised to

These products are fabulous and we’re so lucky to have them in our modern world. Just be sure to realise it not a magic wand solution. Continue to still do all the other things you always have Oh and always get professional advice!

Can I Lose My Hair Due to Stress

Can I Lose My Hair Due To Stress?

Can I lose my hair due to stress | Hairdresser Trigg | Scarborough | North Beach | Carine | Duncraig | Sorrento

Yes, you can lose your hair due to stress! Its completely unfair but entirely possible.

Let’s start with a basic lesson on the lifecycle of the hair on your scalp.

There are 3 main stages:

Firstly, the growing stage which is usually somewhere between 4-7 years. That’s right, not everyone is capable of growing their hair as long as they like.

Secondly, the resting stage. Once it’s reached the end of its growth, your hair stops growing and sits there waiting for a new one to grow beneath it.

Thirdly the falling out stage. Once that new hair grows it will push out the old one and the cycle begins all over again.

Ok, now you know the answer to ‘can I lose my hair due to stress’, let’s get to why your hair can fall out from stress.

Sometimes when we have a big stress on our bodies, either mental or physical, a bunch of our hair can go into the second stage prematurely. This stress response from our bodies is called telogen effluvium.

The sneaky thing about telogen effluvium is that it won’t usually fall our straight away. Normally you will experience the loss 2-3 months after the stress even happened. This can make it confusing when you’re no longer stressed and your hair is coming out.

On average we lose 100-150 hairs a day, when this happens, you don’t even notice. With telogen effluvium this amount increases from a little to a lot.

So, what can we do about it?

If the stress is something you can plan for such as knowing you’ll be going in for an operation or knowing your about to have a huge work load, supplements can help.

In times of stress your body goes through lots of vitamins and minerals much quicker and this can affect your hair loss. Cortisol, the stress hormone particularly loves stripping you of vitamin B for example. taking a supplement can really assist you.

If the stress comes out of the blue such as an emergency or unplanned injury, start taking supplements as soon as you can. It’s not as good as having a build-up already in your system but if your body is getting all it needs, it can recover faster.

Then of course we can look at our mindfulness. Meditation, taking time for yourself, sleeping well, eating a well-balanced diet, drinking less alcohol and caffeine, just to name a few. You know all of this of course but sometimes it’s easier said than done right!

Keep in mind, the best thing about your body is that it will sort itself out. Sadly, hair is slow growing so it can take a year or more. Feel grateful to your body because its looking after all the thing you can see, your organs that keep you alive.

Introducing New Team Member Stephen

Introducing New Team Member Stephen

Hair Studio Hairdressing Team Stephen

Introducing new team member Stephen,

I visited Perth two times as a tourist and fell in love with everything about the west coast. I felt at home with the people and culture, so much so that I decided to make it my home.

I grew up in Sydney where I started working as a hairdresser on the weekends while I was in school. I had a real passion for hair and the salon environment where I thrived.

I started my apprenticeship straight out of high school. Now, 15 years on, I still love this profession and what I get to do each day.

I get a buzz out of meeting new people and getting to know them but most of all I love making people feel good about themselves. The best way to do this is to help people have best hair they possibly can.

In my time in this fabulous industry, I’ve had the opportunity to work is some very different areas compared to my daily life on the salon floor. From styling hair for photos shoots right through to doing hair cuts on some amazing humans in disability group homes, I feel like I’ve used my skills in varied places!

I look forward to meeting you soon.

How To Create The Perfect Curl

How To Create The Perfect Curl

Trigg Hair Studio | How to do the perfect curl || Hairdresser Trigg | Scarborough | Karinyuo | North Beach | Watermans Bay | Sorrento | Carine | Duncraig

We want to help YOU create the perfect curl!

We get it, it looks so easy when the professionals do it right! Well we’d hope so, we’ve spent years making it look this way!

First things first, its best to try the following techniques with the hot tool turned off first. This way you can have a play and get used to the feeling without burning your hair unnecessarily.

There are many options to create a curl/wave from a hot tool. You can choose from curling irons, flat irons and many other conical shapes. The basic principals are the same.

You need to think about the direction the curl/wave is going in. Glamour curls/waves are typically all the the same direction and a more playful  or textured wave mixes it up a little.

Lets start with the glamour wave

To create a more polished curl/wave, you’re going to direct the hot tool in the same direction going away from the face and meeting in the middle at the back of your head. This will allow the curls to fall into each other and will give you the polished result you’re after.

Secondly the textured wave/curl

To create a more textured or playful curl/wave, you’re going to change the direction of the hair for each section. This prevents the hair from falling in together and therefore creates the ‘textured’ look you’re after.

Texture and glamour curl

You can combine these two textures together by directing the curls in the same direction, away from the face but leaving the ends out for a less structured finish.

Quick tips to make your curls/waves:

  • Don’t wash your hair right before you curl it. Depending on your hair type you should wash the night before or even 2-3 day after for best results. This is because a little of your natural oils will help the curl to retain in your hair.
  • Always use a great quality heat protector to help minimise the damage to your hair. These tools typically run between 180-230 degrees, the damage builds up over time so do your best to protect it.
  • Prepare the hair with a good quality mousse, this can be applied wet or dry or both.
  • Good quality hairspray and texture dust is a great way to finish the result and helps the style to stay for longer.

We can assist you with high quality products to help you, it does make a huge difference working with the best products possible.

The last thing is super important. Be sure to use the best quality hot tools you can. The better brands have special coatings often ceramic or from gemstones. This greatly assists in keeping your hair from getting as damaged. That being said try to keep use to a minimum as every time is doing at least a a small amount of damage.

Choose Activance Professional To Treat Most Scalp Conditions

Trichology – I Choose Activance Professional To Treat Most Scalp Conditions

Sam Macdonald Hair | Hairdresser Trigg North Beach Scarborough Karrinyup Sorrento |Trichology| Scalp Care

Last week I gave you a small introduction into the wonderful world of Trichology, today I will introduce a product that I use in conjunction with the Trichoscope to help these issues, called Activance Professional.

To remind you, Trichology is basically the study of hair and scalp and if we have a healthy scalp then we have healthy and strong hair.

There are many things that can impact on scalp health and I will be talking in the future about the impact of stress and medications and what this can do to the hair, as well as what we have previously discussed about diet and nutrition

So what if poor scalp heath out of our control because we have to be on medications or its hormonal?

This is where we can look at topical products to nurture the scalp and follicles from the outside in and there are many ranges out there that can help with this, though my choice is Activance Professional.

Activance Professional is simple and easy to use and we can record your scalps progress whilst using it, by simply examining your scalp each time you’re in the salon with the Trichoscope, and taking photos to check your progress. You can have the best advice possible for great scalp care and your photos can be emailed to you and where necessary taken to your doctor or dermatologist for further medical advice.

So why Activance?

Anti-pollution: Through the use of antioxidants we can help undo what our environment does to our skin by detoxifying the scalp to allow the active ingredients to get in.

Anti-aging: Every hair needs nutrients to grow to its best potential strand and over time our bodies can fail to give as much as when we’re younger, with Activance we can give your scalp those nutrients from the outside in.

Anti-stress: Whilst nothing can completely stop the ill effects of the stress hormone Cortisol on the body except learning to cope better with stress itself, Activance can help nurture to assist in prevention of hair loss from stress.

Pro-environment: All Activance products are vegan, never tested on animals and you can rest assured the product is 100% biodegradable unlike a lot of products on the market.

I’m really excited to be able to share this with you as I want you to have every technology available to you for the best hair you can have!

If you’d like to book an appointment to give your hair or scalp some love, I’d be happy to talk through it’s current condition as part of your initial consultation. All the details to make a booking can be found here.

How Does A Perm Work?

How Does A Perm Work?

how does a perm work | Sam Macdonald Hair | Hairdresser Trigg Scarborough Northe Beach Karrinyup Carine

Ever asked yourself how does a perm work?

Well wether you wondered or not, today’s post will answer this question.

I have previously described how we can temporarily reshape the hair through styling by changing the physical (otherwise known as the temporary) bonds of the hair with heat or moisture into the desired shape. What if we wanted a permanent curl or to remove the curl to create straigtness, from the hair for good?

Yes that’s right, a “perm” can be used to straighten curly hair too!

When we curl or straighten the hair permanently we also work with bonds in the hair. Instead of the physical ones, we work on the chemical ones. We wind the hair and place in the shape we wish it to take, for example different sized rollers for alternative shapes or flat boards for straighness. Then we apply a solution that literally breaks apart the hairs chemical bonds.

Once enough bonds have broken, the hair is rinsed for approximately 10 minutes to remove the solution from the hair. In addition to this, the oxygen from the water starts the rebonding process which creates the curl shape, then a new solution called neutraliser, is applied to make the new shape permanent.

It’s sounds aggressive because it is!

We literally break the hair apart to reshape so there is always at least a little loss of moisture and/or strength, as well as breaking of bonds that do not reconnect.

I bet not many of you have perms these days but it’s important to know that these bonds in the hair can be sensitised by too much colouring, bad home care and also your styling regime.

The good news is that we now have special bond treatments in salon to help protect them at the time of colouring/perming as well as being able to upkeep at home to help prevent all that damage that happens at home.

I will share more about bond treatments next time but for today I hope you enjoyed the answer to ‘How Does A Perm Work?’

If you’d like to book an appointment to give your hair some love I’d be happy to talk through it’s current condition as part of your initial consultation. All the details to make a booking can be found here.

I guess the really important thing to tell you though is that I don’t offer perms of any type!

Hair Loss

Hair Loss Facts!

Sam Macdonald Hair | Hair Loss Facts | Hairdresser Trigg North Beach Scarborough Karrinyup

Hair loss!

We all occasionally suffer from a bit of hair loss and I thought I would share a few of the reasons why…

At any one time, approximately 10% of our hair is in Telogen, which is the phase where I can fall out easily with no pain as its ready to come out.

Sometimes when we have a big shock or major stress in our lives, it can show up approximately 10 weeks after the event as extra hair loss. This is because it takes that long from where the hair begins to grow to falling out. We call this Telogen effluvium and is because the hairs natural growing phases are impacted. This condition will fix itself with time though can happen repeatedly if you don’t look after yourself.

Sometimes hair loss can be caused by external elements and happens at the other ends of the hair from the roots, that’s right we call it breakage and is usually caused by to much heat, chemicals and not enough good hair care. I will go into this one further next week.

In summary, these are just a few of the main reasons for some hair loss but there are many more related to hormones.

If you ever want to discuss concerns with me, please contact me to book a time and if I can’t assist you, I do know a specialist that can help.
