Females Pattern Bladness

Female Pattern Baldness

Sam Macdonald Hair | Hairdresser Trigg North Beach Sorrento Karinyup Carine Duncraig Scarborough | Female Pattern Baldness

Fun Fact! 40% of women have female pattern baldness, (hair loss), by the time they go through menopause.

Here we were thinking it was just the blokes that had to endure this. In fact, most men who will go bald will notice it starting in their 20’s. At least us women can add a couple more decades on…

Some things that can affect hair loss are lack of required minerals in our bodies, stress or shock. In all honesty we can’t always stop this happening but we can slow it down and, in some cases, stop it completely.

First things first, lifestyle.

If you are not getting all the vitamins and minerals you need, your hair will suffer. Actually, your whole body will suffer but your hair will show it first.

Your body is super intelligent and it will use any minerals and vitamins for the essential parts of your body first. You guessed it; hair is last on that list.

Secondly become aware of stress in your body and try to deal with it in a way that’s suits your lifestyle. For most of exercise is a great way to release stress.

It’s not always easy to remove stress completely these days but being aware of it can really help. For example, notice when you’re tensing up and become more mindful of releasing it.

Shock is a hard one as its often unexpected. Sometimes we can know we’ll be having a shock, in the form of something coming up like an operation which is a shock on the body.

You can lose hair a couple of months after a shock so if you know this is coming you can take supplements to reduce its impact on the body.

Unfortunately sometimes it’s just part of your life cycle and its normal to experience some thinning.

You can change your part frequently to stop your part line scalp getting too much UV. Sunlight can speed up hair loss in the part area so this is an easy fix.

Zinc And Your Hair

Zinc And Your Hair

Did you know that zinc is super important for a good head of hair?

It’s not only required for our overall health, but it’s also very essential for the growth of healthy hair. When its levels get low, your hair will suffer first.

Zinc is an essential mineral and that means that our bodies don’t produce it ourselves so we have to eat foods rich in Zinc.

In Australia we have very low levels of Zinc and as a result many of us are not getting as much as we need.

Sadly these days it’s not always enough to have a well balanced unprocessed diet, sometimes we need a good supplement.

So what part does Zinc actually play in our bodies?

We need Zinc for division and growth of every cell in our body, including our hair. It also plays a big part in keeping our immune system strong therefore preventing catching colds for example.

It also helps us heals faster, has an impact with creating DNA and is required for good thyroid function.

As you can see it’s a super important mineral for your hair and all of you. If you’re not getting enough your body will take what it has to the more important parts of your body and your hair will suffer.

A good supplement will help and in salon I have a range of fabulous high quality supplements especially designed at a good head of hair. You guessed it, it’s got Zinc in it, among other fabulous things of course.

Apotecari Mane Event is Vegan and had many activated vitamins and minerals which means your body can absorb it quickly. This is good for everyone but particularly for people that have problems absorbing all the nutrients from their food.

Stress And Its Impact On Your Hair And Scalp

Stress And Its Impact On Your Hair & Scalp

You have heard mention of stress potentially effecting your scalp and hair but what does this actually mean?

First lets touch on the stress Hormone known as Cortisol.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone which does heaps of things including to help control blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism & reduce inflammation.

What we originally needed it for is to help us through immediate stress such as being attacked by an animal.

The adrenal gland releases several hormones giving us an adrenaline rush and following that we get a huge release of cortisol that helps us to escape danger.

Short bursts of cortisol are needed to help us recover from the stress, they boost blood sugars levels to give instant energy, reduce pain levels to keep us focused and pull calcium from our bones to our muscles for quick response.

These days our stress is different and tends to be more frequent and continuous. We suffer job loss, financial insecurity, marriage problems and so much more, these problems not being quickly over and this is where Cortisol can cause a problem.

Extended exposure to Cortisol can raise blood sugar levels, remove much needed Calcium from our bones, raise blood pressure, cause depression, retain excess fat and also have devastating results on our hair which can lead to hair loss.

Cortisol And Hair Loss

Now you ask, why exactly is this causing hair loss?

Briefly its to do with the life cycle of your hair and in my next blog I will share more in depth what this is all about.

In the meantime why don’t you ask your self if you feel there is excess stress in your life and what do you think you could do to lower it.
Its incredible once you stop and truly ask yourself this question, what you will uncover. Simply being aware of your breathing and when it is not relaxed its a very good start!

How To Prevent Heat Damage To You Hair

Prevention Is Better Than Cure; How To Prevent Heat Damage To Your Hair

Long straight hair | prevent hair heat damage | Sam Macdonald Hair | Trigg WA

In my last post I shared with you what the effects of hot styling can do to the hair over time. This time I will share the easiest way of preventing damage and keeping your hair looking at its best…

Firstly you need 3 foundation products and they are a good quality shampoo, conditioner and leave in conditioner for the ends.

The best way to know you are using the right ones, is to have them prescribed especially for you by your hairdresser or a hairdresser in a salon you don’t go to can also advise you. Don’t fall into the trap of simply reading the bottle and reading for yourself, although its seems simple, there as often a little more to it so professional advise is a must.

The next thing you MUST have if you intend hot styling is to use a heat protector. A heat protector will not stop all damage, but it will drastically decrease the heat damage to your hair.

A good way to see if your heat protector is any good, is to spray it on the back of one of your hands and then get the blow dryer close to the skin and see the comparison of the heat on the protected hand and the unprotected hand.

These 4 products are a must and you may also require further styling that your hairdresser can recommend.

When it comes to doing the right thing by your hair and being proactive about protect ing your hair from damage don’t guess what you could do. Instead ask your hairdresser for their advice as they’ll be able to talk to you about your hair, it’s actual condition and the right products for you.

If you’d like to book an appointment to give your hair some love I’d be happy to talk through it’s current condition as part of your initial consultation. All the details to make a booking can be found here.

What Is Using Your Straightener Doing To Your Hair?

What Is Using Your Straightener Doing To Your Hair?

Hair Tip Sam Macdonald Hair | Trigg Scarborough North Beach

Have you ever stopped and thought about how you treat your hair, when using your hot tools including hair straighteners and curling thongs?

When I see hair that is struggling from over styling I will ask how often hot tools are used and usually get a response such as, ‘not very often, just once or twice a week’.

I know this doesn’t seem like much does it but lets do some sums…

Lets assume your hair is a silk scarf, as chemically hair and silk are quite similar.

Your hair grows 1 – 1.5 centimeters a  onth so if your hair is at your shoulders, that means its on average 2 years old.

Most hot tools are at about 200 degrees so imagine that you iron your silk scarf once a week for 2 years.

Now imagine you do it twice a week for 2 years…

That’s 208 times, what does that scarf look like?

Wow this is starting to get scary isn’t it!

Now imagine your hair is actually longer than your shoulders and is 4 years old and you iron it twice a week at 200 degrees….

OMG, using your hair straightener you’ve ironed your hair 416 times at 200 degrees…

Put on top of this showers that are too hot in winter, summers spent in the sun and salt water, UV light and every other little thing that your poor hair goes through…

Time to start thinking of your hair as the piece of clothing you never take off, isn’t it!

There are some amazing things you can do to prevent this damage happening in the first place and secondly (though not ever as good as prevention) is reconnecting some of the bonds that hold your hair together and therefore impacting the condition. I will go into these at a later date.
